Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I register a trademark if my business is already registered at CAC?

CAC registration only registers your corporate entity name; it does not stop others from using your brand name, logo, or slogan as a trademark on their products. A Trademark Registration grants you exclusive statutory rights to your brand assets across Nigeria and lets you sue for infringement.

What is a 'Class' in trademark filing?

Trademarks are filed under specific Nice Classification categories (Classes 1 to 45) depending on the nature of your business. For example, Class 9 is for tech/software, Class 25 is for clothing, and Class 35 is for advertising/retail services. One registration fee covers filing under one class.

How long does trademark registration last?

Once issued, a Trademark Certificate is valid for an initial period of 7 years, after which it can be renewed every 14 years indefinitely.
